The U.S. Government has supported several successful research, development and commercialization projects through public and private partnerships and funding. This continued support is essential to the development of the industry.

Research and Development of Resources, Refining, Manufacturing and Recycling—The United States could develop the domestic lithium battery materials sector and electric vehicle and energy storage capacity though sustained and increased government investment and regulatory coordination. The United States will have to balance increasing lithium metal and lithium salts demand with new domestic supply, and recycling.1

Production Programs—The government should continue to support production programs that can utilize the value chain of material providers that exists in the United States. Without such programs, the current production capacity may move offshore.
